The following data has been compiled on Worldwide Car Fatalities. The figures cover the total number of fatalities per year, as well as the death rate per 100,000 cars on the road in a country. According to the World Health Organization, there were an estimated 1.24 million fatalities worldwide in the year 2010, down from 1.26 million in 2000. Adults aged between 15 and 44 years accounted for 59% of fatalities and 3 out of 4 road fatalities were among men. Half of all road traffic fatalities are among pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists. Worldwide the average rate of road traffic fatalities was 18 per 100,000 people (down from 20.8 in 2000). Overall, 92% of vehicle related deaths occurred in low and middle income countries. (Source Wikipedia)

The 5 countries with the highest total number of car fatalities per year are:

  • CHINA - 68,000
  • INDONESIA - 39,253
  • BRAZIL - 37,694
  • USA - 33,808

However, if car fatalities are calculated as a rate per 100,000 cars, the highest rate of car fatalities are in Ethiopia, Central African Republic, Kenya, Sudan and Angola.

The 5 countries with the lowest total number of car fatalities by year are:

  • SINGAPORE - 249
  • NORWAY - 267
  • SWEDEN - 270

Iceland, Japan, Sweden, UK and Germany have the lowest rate of car fatalities per 100,000 cars.

Of countries with a similar size population to the UK, Kazakhstan has 5067 car fatalities per year at a rate of 155 fatalities per 100,000 cars, Argentina has 7485 fatalities per year, a rate of 43.8 fatalities per 100,000 cars and the Central African Republic has 1445 fatalities per year with a very high rate of fatalities per 100,000 cars at 8050. The UK has a much lower rate of car fatalities per 100,000 cars at only 7 fatalities per 100,000, but it has an annual figure of 2222 car fatalities.

In comparison to the USA, the UK has less than half the number of car fatalities per 100,000 cars and 6 fatalities (per 100,000 cars) a year less than Canada. The UK has 2.5 less fatalities a year per 100,000 cars than France and a similar figure to Germany. Australia has a rate of 8 car fatalities per 100,000 cars in comparison in the UK's 7, whilst South Africa has a rate of 208.8 fatalities per 100,000 cars.

In the UK the % of car fatalities per year as by age group were as follows:

  • 0-15 = 4.9%
  • 16-24 = 25.5%
  • 25-34 = 16.5%
  • 35-44 = 15%
  • 45-54 = 11.7%
  • 55-64 = 7.6%
  • 65+ = 19%

The number of deaths, in the UK, caused by speeding was 430, with the same figure caused by inexperienced driving, whilst drunk driving created 250 deaths. 300 people were killed due to not wearing a seatbelt, and careless driving resulted in 300 deaths. The highest number of deaths was caused by loss of control of the vehicle, with 840 deaths per year.
